Luxurious Shampoo at Home

I know that I love getting my hair washed while I'm at the salon! Here are some of my salon shampoo secrets that you can utilize at home to get the same results.

  1. Make sure to brush/comb hair while it is dry right before it is washed. This will ensure all of the tangles are out before the hair gets wet.

  2. Hair has to be completely wet before applying anything to the hair. A trick I like to use is to open up the hair in different sections to ensure complete saturation.

  3. Pre shampoo treatment is my recommended first product step to maintain healthy hair at home. My favorite is the Olaplex n.3. This treatment will give the hair protein to promote healthy locks.

  4. Always shampoo the hair twice. By doing two shampoos, this will result in the most clean and fresh hair. The first wash will loosen any product build up, debris, and oils. The second shampoo is what will actually cleanse the scalp & hair. Two shampoos will allow you to go longer in between washes.

  5. After shampooing, it is important to follow up with a conditioner. The trick to getting the full benefit of the conditioner is to apply to damp hair. Conditioner is made up of oils, however, oil and water don't mix. I recommend letting the conditioner sit on for 3-5 minutes so it can fully absorb in all three layers of the hair.

  6. Before rinsing out the conditioner, use a wide tooth comb to gently comb any tangles out. By doing this step, it will make it much easier to comb out the hair afterwards. Hair is most fragile while wet and will stretch up 18% its actual length.

  7. Apply any leave in products 10 minutes afterwards. Same with the conditioners, leave in products are made up of mostly oils. It is recommended to towel dry the hair first and if time allows, wait 10 minutes before applying. Water molecules are bigger than the molecules in hair care products. Because of this size difference, the products cannot be fully absorbed and in turn, not fully benefitting the hair. Don't forget heat protectant!

  8. Blow drying the hair after a shampoo will result in a longer lasting style. Most products are heat activated. By blow drying the hair after a shampoo, it will lock in the products and will give you a longer time frame in between washes. Extra tip: after the blow dry, apply a little bit of dry shampoo to get more volume and a longer time frame with the shampoo. The purpose of this step is so the dry shampoo can fight the natural oils and elements from the very start.
